How to recruit new high-quality governors

Inspiring Governance

The key to recruiting the right governor is to be clear first about the type of person and skills you are looking for.

As a governing body, you may have identified a need to recruit high-calibre individuals, but how do you sell the role to capture the right people?

If your governing body is making the appointment, you can use your contacts in the local community and with local employers to advertise the vacancy and look for people who have volunteered in your area via Inspiring Governance.

Inspiring Governance is a new free service that enables you to find appropriately skilled volunteers interested in becoming a school governors or trustees in your area. It is built upon the highly successful Inspiring the Future online volunteer/school & college matchmaking service which has over 10,000 teachers and over 30,000 volunteers registered across the country.

Our volunteers are from a wide range of backgrounds, professions and sectors such as Finance, Human Resources, Law, and Marketing. Recruiting boards can search easily and quickly for the skills and experience they need.

How do I sign-up?

Signing up is easy.

  1. Click Sign-up and select To recruit governors – register here.
  2. Follow the steps.
  3. Click the ‘Find Volunteers’ and search for suitable volunteers.
  4. Send them an invitation and wait for them to respond!

If you are looking to recruit governors/trustees for multiple schools e.g. Multi-Academy Trust, Local Authority, or Diocese please select ‘ To recruit governors or trustees – register here’  and we will be in touch to discuss your requirements.

If your vacancy is for a foundation governor appointed by the church or other foundation, your skills audit will be equally valuable in informing them about the type of governor you are looking for. Your skills audit can also be used to inform the election of parent and staff governors. You should publish a description of what being a governor entails and the generic and specific skills you are after.

The National Governors’ Association (NGA) website also has a wealth of information to help you recruit new governors and trustees.
